Zentangle is an American method of drawing invented by a monk named Rick Roberts and an artist named Maria Thomas. They created an art form with a combination of art and meditation.
It is a very fun and relaxing abstract art. It offers structured drawing patterns and shapes. Patterns are known as tangles and shapes are Elemental strokes. It is different from other art forms as it can be anything as there are no fixed motifs. You can start and finish with anything that comes in your mind. There is nothing wrong or right in this art form. This is directly made from pen,so mistakes can happen and this art form teaches to accept the flaws nicely. However, beginners can use pencil to draw the outlines and designs to fill the same.
This art form is also called for artistic meditation. It provides a sense of calmness and peace. It helps to heal many disorders including sleep, stress, anxiety etc. It enhances focus and relaxation to create mindfulness.
It is often drawn by black fineliners or markers on 9 x 9 cm white square paper. The paper used for drawing is called a tile because completed tiles can be arranged together in a beautiful mosaic. It's a very simple art form and requires the least of things to do it, just a pen and paper with thoughts in mind.
I am sharing a few zentangle patterns done on white A4 sheet with Sharpie and fineliner pens.
